Australian flutist Catherine Gregory, winner of the Pro Musicis International Award, enjoys a dynamic career as a soloist, ensemble player, teaching artist and creative collaborator. Her performances of both new and old music have taken her across the globe from Alice Tully Hall in New York, to London’s Milton Court, Hamburg’s new Elbphilharmonie, and the Sydney Opera House. The New York Times has called her playing “magically mysterious,” also writing that “Ms. Gregory left a deep impression… her sound rich and fully present.”
As a sought-after recitalist and chamber musician, she has been a guest of Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Philadelphia CMS, Caramoor, Bay Chamber Festival and the Southern Cross Soloists, as well as on tour with the Australian and Orpheus Chamber Orchestras, and in numerous cycles as guest principal flute with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. She has served as Co-Artistic director of Decoda, and made her Carnegie Hall recital debut in 2019.
Catherine is deeply passionate about connecting directly with communities through music. She has developed a solo interactive performance workshop for cancer patients, providers and caregivers called Just Breathe. This initiative has also spawned a new commissioning project through which Catherine will perform miniature works for combinations for flute, percussion and voice by some of today’s leading composers. Committed to nurturing the next generation of young artists, Catherine has established herself as an accomplished pedagogue, having served as visiting Flute Lecturer at Lawrence University in Wisconsin, and as the flute faculty member for the Decoda Chamber Music Festival. She has also given masterclasses and workshops at various institutions including Queensland Conservatorium (Australia), Guildhall, Curtis, Eastman, The Tianjin Juilliard School, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory (Singapore), The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Hartt School of Music. Catherine is currently a Lecturer with the Music Industry Program at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, where she has developed a new course helping students to become “artistic citizens,” strategizing how to integrate their artistic practice within real communities.
The recipient of numerous awards, Catherine has been a Fulbright Scholar, a Brisbane City Council Emerging Artist’s Fellow, and an American Australian Association’s Dame Joan Sutherland Fund grantee. After graduating with First Class Honors and the University Medal from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University (Australia), Catherine earned her Artist Diploma at Carnegie Mellon University. Catherine is an alumna of Ensemble Connect: a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, the Weill Music Institute and the New York City Department of Education. Her principal teachers were Gerhard Mallon, Alberto Almarza, and Jeanne Baxtresser.
Catherine is set to release her debut album together with pianist David Kaplan, entitled Vent, on the Bright Shiny Things label in 2023.
